Project Summary

The proposed bridge is an elegant two span structure formed from twin glulam beams, carefully optimised for structural efficiency, pedestrian comfort and minimal material use. A modular deck system sits above the beams and combines the walking surface, drainage and edge protection. This allows the design to be prototyped and adapted for future bridge sites, while the glulam beams respond to site specific spans and constraints.
The central innovation is the project’s exceptionally low whole life carbon strategy. The bridge uses no concrete at all, with rammed earth abutments, removable steel screw piles and a lightweight steel tetrapod pier made from modified tubular offcuts. These choices support a circular construction approach while still meeting demanding technical, durability and lifespan expectations.
The design also addresses timber durability and biodiversity. An overhanging floating deck protects the glulam beams from rainfall, while ventilation around the structure helps drive off moisture. Planted earth ramps, native vegetation, a wildflower meadow and integrated pollinator habitats extend the project’s low carbon ambition into the landscape, improving habitat connectivity and the experience for bridge users and road users below.
