Railway Court, Dublin 1

The site had previously contained Corporation Flats that were demolished, leaving a lack of activity that contributed to anti social behaviour. Its location in Dublin 1 offered an opportunity to repair the urban fabric and create a stronger residential community. The design therefore prioritises safety, social value and the improvement of the surrounding streetscape.

Seán Harrington Architects and Circle VHA worked closely with Dublin City Council, local residents and An Garda Síochána throughout the design stage. The agreed approach was based on defensible space, including passive surveillance, buffer zones, privacy strips and a secure communal courtyard. A resident community facility was placed at the northwest corner, fronting both the pedestrian street and Railway Street to provide a useful local resource.

The scheme combines efficient apartment layouts with environmental performance. Repetitive modular layouts, three access cores and compact building form support cost effective delivery, while ground floor homes connect directly to the street. Air to water heat pumps, photovoltaic panels, green roofs, generous cycle storage and pollinator friendly landscaping contribute to energy efficiency, sustainable drainage and a typical A2 BER.
