Waterford North Quays Transport Hub

The North Quays lands are a significant 8.2Ha former port asset with 1km of River Suir frontage. Their regeneration is intended to create a compact, sustainable and mixed use extension to Waterford city centre. Delivering that ambition requires new infrastructure, including an integrated multi modal transport hub that improves access and supports a shift towards more sustainable movement.

The transport hub will become a new gateway from the north to both the North Quays Development and the existing city core. In a city with a high quality civic heritage, the station, bridges and public realm are designed to meet a similar threshold of architectural ambition. The main concourse sits at first floor level above the platforms, providing shelter to arriving passengers and forming part of a wider public crossing over the rail line.

The public realm strategy focuses on legibility, access and civic presence. A new plaza to the north of the hub creates a clear arrival space, while the stepped station entrance and canopy are scaled to be visible from a distance. The scheme allows transport functions to operate efficiently without allowing vehicles to dominate the pedestrian experience.
